If the company you are looking for is missing then it has probably
been absorbed by one of those listed - check the mergers & acquisitions table. In the
late 1990s there was a great deal of consolidation in the oil
industry in a drive to cut costs and this significantly reduced
the number of companies with interests in the UK.
However, in recent years, with the continuing maturity of the
North Sea, many of the majors have started to divert their focus
to potentially more lucrative areas around the world and this has
opened the door to a number of small (but growing) independents
who are looking to extract additional value from the North Sea
through the implementation of new technology to reduce drilling
costs and improve operating efficiency.
